Orlando Pirates’ Betway Premiership title push took another hit after their draw with Richards Bay FC, a result that has left the Buccaneers trailing Mamelodi Sundowns in the standings.
With Sundowns sitting on 56 points and Pirates just behind on 55 — albeit having played a game more — the balance of control has shifted at the summit with only a handful of matches remaining. And while Pirates may look elsewhere for assistance in the run-in, Richards Bay co-coach Papi Zothwane has made it clear his side will not be drawn into the title equation.
“They can’t bank on us because we’ve got our own machine, they have their own,” said Zothwane.
The Natal Rich Boyz have built a reputation as one of the toughest sides to beat at home, and their recent record at uMhlathuze Sports Complex reinforces that status. They have already claimed a notable victory over Kaizer Chiefs and now added a draw against Pirates — results that underline their resilience.
“What we always emphasise on our players is that no one must come out here. That’s the slogan for every team that we are playing against. That’s why we only lost one game against Orbit [College] in the league.”
That form could yet have a decisive say in the title race, with Sundowns set to visit Richards Bay in the coming days. It is a fixture that will inevitably draw attention from Pirates, who now find themselves needing help as much as results of their own.
But Zothwane insists the focus remains unchanged.
“It’s difficult to beat us here because we are not only playing for ourselves but for our supporters, they have been hungry for matches here.”
Beyond the title implications, Richards Bay are also playing with their own objectives in mind, looking to finish the season strongly and avoid being dragged deeper into the lower half of the standings.
Their ability to take points off top sides reflects a team that is organised, disciplined and motivated by more than just survival.
Pirates, meanwhile, must quickly regroup and rediscover their edge in front of goal if they are to keep pace. The margins are now razor-thin, and any further slip could prove decisive in a race where Sundowns have shown little sign of slowing down.
Zothwane’s message, however, is simple — Richards Bay are not part of that battle.
“When they come here, they must get something from us. It feels good to be in front of our supporters after a long time. Whatever we do, we do it for our supporters.”
With the standings tightening and pressure mounting, Pirates may be watching closely — but Richards Bay have made it clear they will not be playing a supporting role in the destination of the title.
