Kaizer Chiefs’ resurgence in the closing stages of the Betway Premiership season has been built on several pillars, but few have been as influential as the form of Brandon Petersen

The Amakhosi goalkeeper has quietly emerged as one of the standout performers in the league, anchoring a side that has found both rhythm and resilience at a crucial time. His importance was once again underlined in the recent victory over TS Galaxy, where he marked his return with yet another clean sheet — his 12th in the league this season.

For co-coach Cedric Kaze, that performance was no surprise, but rather a continuation of a campaign that has seen Petersen evolve into a leader and a match-winner.

Character development

There was a time not too long ago when Petersen looked destined to fall out of favour at Chiefs.

Back in 2023, a series of costly errors saw him lose the trust of the Amakhosi faithful, raising serious questions about his long-term future at Naturena. Once seen as the natural heir to club legend Itumeleng Khune, the former Ajax Cape Town academy graduate suddenly found himself on uncertain ground.

The arrivals and competition around him did little to ease that pressure. Fiacre Ntwari was brought in to strengthen the department, while Bruce Bvuma remained a constant alternative.

For a club that has historically boasted stability in goal — from Brian Baloyi to Rowen Fernandez and Khune — it was an unfamiliar situation. Yet, rather than fade, Petersen reset.

The 2025/2026 season

This season has marked a complete transformation.

Now 31-year old, Petersen is enjoying arguably the best campaign of his career, not just at Chiefs but across his stints with Ajax Cape Town and Bidvest Wits.

His record of 12 league clean sheets — and 16 in all competitions — places him among the elite, second only to Sipho Chaine domestically. More than the numbers, it is his authority that stands out. Petersen has become the foundation of Chiefs’ defensive strength, providing composure, leadership and consistency in equal measure.

His performances have turned him into “Mr Clean Sheets”, with the club’s push for continental football resting heavily on his gloves. Even after a brief spell out through illness, he returned seamlessly, reinforcing just how vital he has become.

Bafana Bafana – 2026 Fifa World Cup

Petersen’s form has not gone unnoticed at national level.

Hugo Broos recently revealed that the goalkeeper would have been part of the South Africa national football team squad for their friendlies against Panama had it not been for injury. A significant statement in a position typically dominated by established names like Ronwen Williams and Ricardo Goss.

With the Fifa World Cup on the horizon, the competition for places is intensifying, and Petersen has entered the conversation at exactly the right time.

If he maintains this level, his inclusion will become difficult to ignore.

From doubt to dominance, Petersen’s journey is one of resilience and redemption — and as both club and country look ahead to defining months, he may just be peaking when it matters most.
