The Betway Premiership title race has entered a decisive phase for Orlando Pirates — and the numbers suggest both hope and danger in equal measure.
The past weekend may have seemed like a decisive blow to their title credentials considering the experience of Mamelodi Sundowns. This latest stretch of games may appear a huge hurdle for Pirates, considering four of them have to be away, which is a grey area in the South African grey area as far as the Big Three is concerned.
On one hand, Pirates have been one of the most efficient travelling sides in the division this season, averaging 2.25 points per away match across 12 fixtures, a return that places them among the league’s strongest performers outside their home ground.
Their away goal return of 26 goals scored also highlights a side that does not struggle to impose itself on the road. At home, they have been equally effective, averaging 2.33 points per game and maintaining a solid defensive base, conceding just four goals in 12 home matches.
The balance between both records has been a major reason for their sustained title challenge. However, the problem now is not what they have done — but what lies ahead.
Pirates’ final six fixtures read like a season-defining gauntlet: AmaZulu FC (home), Kaizer Chiefs (FNB Stadium), Stellenbosch FC (away), Magesi FC (away), Durban City FC (home), and Orbit College (away). Each match carries its own context, but the common thread is pressure — especially with four of those six matches taking place away from Orlando Stadium.
The Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium stands out as a psychological landmark, while trips to Stellies and Orbit College could prove decisive given both sides’ contrasting ambitions — European qualification for one, survival for the other.
Even fixtures that appear favourable on paper, such as Magesi FC and Durban City FC, come with their own dangers at this stage of the season.
Relegation-threatened sides often raise their intensity in the final stretch, while mid-table teams playing without pressure can be unpredictable.
What complicates matters further is the relentless form of Mamelodi Sundowns, who continue to set the pace at the top. Pirates are no longer in control of the title race, meaning even a strong run may not guarantee silverware if Sundowns maintain their consistency.
Still, there is belief within the Buccaneers camp. Their away record suggests resilience, adaptability, and the ability to perform under pressure — traits that will be tested to the limit in the coming weeks.
The final stretch will not just be about quality, but composure. For Pirates, every away trip now feels like a final.
