AmaZulu FC head coach Arthur Zwane has delivered a frank assessment of his side’s shortcomings following their 3-0 defeat to Orlando Pirates, admitting the result served as a harsh but necessary lesson.

Usuthu remain fourth on the Betway Premiership table, but the gap to Kaizer Chiefs in third has now stretched to seven points — with Amakhosi still holding a game in hand. That reality leaves AmaZulu’s hopes of CAF Confederation Cup qualification hanging by a thread heading into the final stretch of the campaign.

Facing a dominant Pirates side at the Orlando Amstel Arena, Zwane acknowledged that the gulf in quality was evident across the 90 minutes.

“We were tested and shown that we were not at the same level as Pirates or the other teams above us on the log. Pirates exposed us badly,” Zwane said.

Despite occupying a Top 4 position for much of the season, Zwane cautioned against reading too much into league standings without context — particularly when it comes to measuring true competitiveness.

“The position we hold on the log might suggest that we are one of the good teams and sometimes it could give you the wrong message.”

Instead, the former Chiefs coach pointed to the composition of his squad as a key factor in both their progress and their limitations. AmaZulu have leaned heavily on youth this season, with several academy graduates stepping into senior roles — a transition that has brought energy and promise, but also inexperience in high-pressure situations.

“You look at our group and see how many academy graduates we have, players who had never been tested before. For the first time here in Orlando they get tested and it was a very hard lesson for some of them but sometimes it’s good to learn like this because you learn the hard way and you become a better player.”

It is a perspective that frames the defeat not purely as a setback, but as part of a broader developmental process. Against Pirates, that learning curve was steep. AmaZulu struggled to contain the hosts’ attacking movement and intensity, often finding themselves a step behind both physically and tactically.

For Zwane, however, the emphasis now shifts to growth.

With the race for continental qualification slipping away, the focus may increasingly turn toward building a squad capable of competing more consistently with the league’s elite — ensuring that lessons like this translate into progress rather than regression.

Next on Usuthu's agenda is a return to home territory where they'll face Chippa United.
