Bathusi Aubaas has conceded that Orlando Pirates are applying serious pressure in this season’s Betway Premiership title race, forcing Mamelodi Sundowns to elevate their performance levels in the closing weeks.
The Brazilians are chasing a remarkable ninth consecutive league title, but unlike previous campaigns where they have dominated from start to finish, this season has unfolded differently. Pirates have remained within touching distance throughout and now sit two points clear at the top of the standings — albeit having played more games.
That detail remains crucial.
Sundowns still hold two games in hand, leaving the title very much within their control as the run-in intensifies. A victory against Stellenbosch FC on Wednesday would see them reclaim top spot, further tightening what has become one of the most competitive title races in recent seasons.
“They’re pushing us, I’m not going to lie, they’ve doing well this season but we obviously have to focus on ourselves even when they’re pushing. We take every game seriously because they’re pushing us a lot at this stage.”
Aubaas’ remarks reflect a broader shift in the dynamic at the summit. Sundowns are no longer operating with the same margin for error that defined previous title-winning campaigns.
Instead, they are being forced to match consistency with urgency, knowing that any slip could be punished immediately. The midfielder also credited the role of the technical team in maintaining the squad’s focus during this high-pressure period.
“I think the coach has pushed us hard and has remained positive, he encourages us to support one another and keep working hard.”
While Aubaas has not been a regular starter this season, his contributions off the bench in both domestic and continental competitions underline the depth within the Sundowns squad — a factor that could prove decisive as they juggle multiple competitions.
“Each and everyone of us remains ready in the team and when you are called to be in the squad and you are handed an opportunity, we grab it with both hands, we know as players that there’s a lot of quality players here so we can’t mess around when given a chance.”
That internal competition has long been a hallmark of Sundowns’ dominance, but it is now being tested in a far more competitive environment.
With Pirates refusing to relent and Sundowns balancing their league ambitions alongside CAF Champions League commitments, the final stretch promises to be a defining period. For Aubaas and his teammates, the message is clear — the pressure is real, but so too is their belief in navigating it successfully.
