The Soweto Derby rarely needs extra narrative, but Sunday’s meeting between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs arrives layered with history, pressure and a series of records that could redefine this rivalry.
The two teams will clash for a second time in a short space of time with their respective plots in the Betway Premiership on their shoulders alongside underlying numbers. Here, we look at five records on the line in the next Soweto Derby:
Pirates have asserted rare dominance in recent years, winning six of the last seven derby clashes across all competitions. That run already includes a club-record five consecutive league victories over Chiefs, only halted by Amakhosi’s Nedbank Cup final triumph last May.
Now, the Buccaneers stand on the brink of history. A victory on Sunday would secure an unprecedented sixth straight league win in the fixture — a feat never before achieved in this storied rivalry.
For a club built on big-match pedigree, this is as commanding as Pirates have ever been over their Soweto neighbours.
Perhaps one of the most remarkable trends in recent derby history is the complete absence of stalemates. There has not been a draw in the last 17 competitive meetings between the two sides since 2019.
In that time, Pirates have won nine times, while Chiefs have claimed eight victories — a near-perfect split that underlines just how finely balanced the fixture remains despite Pirates’ recent edge.
The last draw, a 2-2 affair in the Telkom Knockout in November 2019, feels like a distant memory. Yet, given Chiefs’ resurgence and Pirates’ occasional vulnerability, this could be the weekend that streak is finally broken.
Evidence Makgopa has quietly built a reputation as a derby specialist. The forward has scored in each of the last three meetings between the sides and now has four goals in this fixture overall.
Should he find the net again, he would move closer to an exclusive piece of history. Only Alfred “Russia” Jacobs and Fani Madida have managed to score in four successive Soweto derbies — a benchmark that has stood for decades.
Even with Yanela Mbuthuma leading the line in recent weeks, Makgopa’s knack for delivering in this fixture could see him handed a decisive role.

In a break from recent tradition, this derby will be played on a Sunday — the first time it isn’t on a Saturday in 13 years.
Modern scheduling has largely reserved the fixture for Saturdays, with midweek clashes avoided due to safety considerations following the Ellis Park Stadium disaster.
The last midweek derby dates back to Heritage Day in 2013. While the day may change, the intensity remains constant, but the shift adds a slightly different rhythm to one of South African football’s biggest occasions.
For Sipho Chaine, Sunday presents a chance to etch his name into Pirates folklore.
Having already matched the club’s single-season clean sheet record (17) — previously held by Moeneeb Josephs — the Buccaneers goalkeeper could break it outright with another shutout. Against Chiefs, that would carry even greater weight, reinforcing his status as one of the league’s standout performers this season.
In a derby defined by legacy and momentum, Sunday offers both sides a chance to shape more than just the title race narrative — it is an opportunity to leave a lasting imprint on one of African football’s greatest rivalries.
