The Betway Premiership title race is now set for a dramatic final-day showdown after another chaotic weekend reshaped the emotions surrounding South African football’s biggest prize.
Just when it appeared Orlando Pirates were preparing to finally place their hands on the trophy, a frustrating goalless draw against Durban City FC ensured the race would spill into the final round of the season. Yet, despite the disappointment and growing anxiety around Soweto, Pirates still appear to hold the advantage heading into next weekend.
The Buccaneers face Orbit College FC knowing victory could still be enough to secure a first league title in 14 years depending on results elsewhere. And psychologically, there is growing belief that momentum may still favour the Soweto giants despite Saturday’s setback.
For much of the season, Pirates have chased down defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns while trying to remain within striking distance.
There were stages where Sundowns looked capable of gradually pulling away through their experience and squad depth. Instead, the title race has remained remarkably fragile.
Both clubs have shown signs of tension in recent weeks, with pressure beginning to expose vulnerabilities that were largely hidden earlier in the campaign. Pirates themselves have struggled in high-pressure moments recently.
Dropped points against Richards Bay FC, Siwelele FC and now Durban City have repeatedly delayed opportunities to fully seize control of the race. However, the Buccaneers still appear slightly better positioned heading into the final weekend.
Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has consistently projected calmness throughout the run-in and continues insisting his side can still finish the job.
The challenge against Orbit College may appear straightforward on paper, but it is likely to carry enormous emotional pressure. Orbit themselves remain involved in the relegation battle and could still be fighting for survival heading into the fixture, potentially making them dangerous opponents.
That means Pirates may once again need to navigate not only tactical difficulties but also the psychological burden of expectation. For Sundowns, the equation has also become uncomfortable.
The defending champions are no longer playing with the freedom of a side in complete control of the title race.
Instead, every moment next weekend could swing momentum dramatically between Pretoria and Soweto. And after months of twists, frustration and shifting pressure, the Betway Premiership now appears set for one final dramatic chapter before a champion is finally crowned.
