Mamelodi Sundowns Miguel Cardoso has welcomed the public support of legendary former coach Pitso Mosimane following the Brazilians’ CAF Champions League first-leg victory against Moroccan side AS Far Rabat.
Mosimane remains the only coach to guide Sundowns to CAF Champions League glory after leading the club to continental success in 2016, a triumph that elevated the Tshwane giants into Africa’s elite.
With Sundowns once again chasing a second continental star, Cardoso admitted he appreciated the encouragement coming from one of the club’s most influential figures.
“I haven’t had the opportunity to cross paths with him or meet him,” said Cardoso.
“I’d be very pleased to have that chance because first of all it means he still has Sundowns in his heart but most of all he’s on the side of the team from his country.”
Sundowns will head into next week’s second leg in Morocco carrying a slender 1-0 advantage after securing an important home victory in Pretoria.
That result has placed the Brazilians within touching distance of another historic continental triumph, although a difficult challenge still awaits them away from home.
The Portuguese mentor also stressed the importance of broader national support as Sundowns continue their pursuit of continental success.
Cardoso believes moments like these should unite South African football behind clubs competing on the African stage, especially in competitions as demanding as the CAF Champions League.
“It’s very important for us that we have the support of the country and that support should also be systematic throughout the season.”
Sundowns carry the responsibility of representing South Africa in continental competition and Cardoso acknowledged the emotional value that support can bring during decisive moments of the campaign.
The Brazilians remain in contention to add another chapter to the club’s history and the backing of figures such as Mosimane has only added to the sense of occasion around the final.
“It’s very important moment for communion because any support is welcome at this point and so thank him for those words,” Cardoso added.
Sundowns will now turn their attention to the decisive return leg in Morocco as they continue their quest to emulate Mosimane’s historic achievement from a decade ago.
