Bafana Bafana will launch their much-anticipated 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign on Monday evening when they take on a dangerous Angolan side at the Stade de Marrakech, with kick-off scheduled for 7pm.
South Africa head into the tournament with renewed belief as they continue to reassert themselves among Africa’s heavyweights. Placed in a challenging group alongside Egypt and Zimbabwe, Bafana are well aware that the opening encounter against Angola could prove decisive in setting the tone for their campaign.
Head coach Hugo Broos, who previously lifted the AFCON trophy with Cameroon, understands the value of a strong start and how it can shape a team’s momentum.
With both Broos and Bafana Bafana chasing a slice of history by targeting a second continental crown, several players will need to step up to ensure the tournament begins on a positive note.
Midfielder Teboho Mokoena could prove decisive as AFCON gets under way in Morocco.

The Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder has established himself as a central figure in Bafana Bafana’s midfield and will once again be expected to play a leading role if South Africa are to progress deep into the competition.
A key contributor during the previous AFCON and the recent World Cup qualifying campaign, the 28-year-old brings valuable experience and consistency to the side.
His ability to execute his responsibilities with precision has been evident in every outing, and against an Angolan team capable of causing problems, his influence will be crucial.
Mokoena’s work rate in linking defence and attack will be especially important as Bafana look to start strongly in a phase of the tournament where mistakes are rarely forgiven.
Oswin Appollis will be key as Bafana Bafana aim to go one better than their bronze finish in 2023.

Oswin Appollis arrives at the tournament in impressive form, with the Orlando Pirates midfielder enjoying a run of consistent performances in recent months.
The former Polokwane City player has been impactful in a Bafana jersey even during his time with the Limpopo-based club and now finds himself part of a confident squad eager to better their previous AFCON showing. With South Africa targeting their first final appearance since the 1998 tournament, Appollis could prove to be a key figure in that pursuit.
At 24, he has demonstrated notable versatility. While much of his effectiveness has come from operating on the left flank, he has also shown the ability to trouble opponents from various positions, as evidenced by his club form this season.
Broos will be hoping Appollis can carry that cutting edge into the tournament and help Bafana make a strong start.

Goalkeepers may often have limited involvement during matches, but their contributions are frequently decisive, with the power to influence results.
Bafana will once again rely on the experience of Ronwen Williams between the posts. The captain played a pivotal role in South Africa’s run at the previous AFCON, where they fell agonisingly short of the final after a penalty shoot-out defeat to Nigeria in the semi-finals.
In addition to his shot-stopping qualities, Williams’ leadership will be vital. With the defensive line not always settled due to various selection challenges, his organisation and communication will be crucial, particularly with several younger players potentially set to feature.
As captain and the last line of defence, Williams will be expected to contribute far more than just shot-stopping to help ensure a successful start to the tournament.
