Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Kgaogelo Sekgota has joined Betway Premiership side Siwelele FC, giving the pacey winger a fresh opportunity to realise the potential that has long been recognised.

Sekgota emerged as one of South Africa’s most promising attacking talents, but his career was been hindered by off-field challenges, including a struggle with marijuana use that led to a spell in rehab.

Having missed several key seasons during crucial years for his development, the 28-year-old will now be aiming to rebuild his career and leave past setbacks behind in the top flight.

Throughout his career, Sekgota has featured for several clubs. He joined Kaizer Chiefs in 2021, quickly becoming a fan favourite, before being released in 2023 to join Stellenbosch FC, where he won the Carling Knockout Cup. During his time at Chiefs, he made forty-eight appearances across all competitions.

He also enjoyed a brief stint in Portugal’s Primeira Liga with Vitória Setúbal, making his debut against FC Porto, before returning to South Africa to play for Bidvest Wits in 2020. Across his career, Sekgota has accumulated 161 appearances, scoring six goals and registering ten assists.

Siwelele FC head coach Lehlhohonolo Seema will be hoping that Sekgota can finally fulfil the promise many saw in him and help the club recover after a slow start to the season. With his top-flight experience and renewed hunger after time away from the spotlight, Sekgota is expected to be a key figure in the squad.

Currently eleventh on the Betway Premiership table, Siwelele have collected nine points in their last six matches. The addition of Sekgota is anticipated to bring energy and creativity to the team as they look to strengthen their squad during the busy period ahead.
