As the Betway Premiership action heats up, Orlando Pirates will look to shake off their rust after a long break and resume their title ambitions with a dominant display against Sekhukhune United on Saturday (kick-off 3.30 pm)

It’s almost two months since Pirates were last in action, and the first order of business will be an ambitious quest to reclaim the top position in the league. This quest starts with an away match against Sekhukhune at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.

After a 48-day sabbatical from competitive fixtures, the Buccaneers will be eager to return to form and make a swift impact.

This January transfer window has seen notable changes within the Pirates squad, particularly the departure of Mbekezeli Mbokazi, who joined Major League Soccer club Chicago Fire. The remaining squad members will work to advance the team as they pursue league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

It’s a critical juncture for both teams; Sekhukhune United is looking to bounce back after suffering a 1-0 defeat against Stellenbosch on Tuesday.

This loss has dropped them to fourth in the standings, trailing bitter rivals Kaizer Chiefs by two points and Sundowns by four points.

The team, led by coach Eric Tinkler, has seen a concerning trend: only one win in their last four league matches, leaving them with a record of seven wins, four draws, and three losses this season.

“I don’t think it is a setback because when you play the big clubs, some of our players are always motivated,” Tinkler stated post-match. “The challenge is to reignite that same level of intensity in every match, especially when facing formidable foes like Pirates."

He remains optimistic that his players will rise to the occasion against the Buccaneers.

On the other side,  Pirates are riding high after a strong start to the 2025/26 campaign, currently sitting second on the table with 28 points from 12 games, just one point shy of Sundowns.

Their record of nine wins, one draw, and only two losses showcases their resilience, especially as they remain unbeaten in the league since August 12, 2025, with Sekhukhune having been the only side to defeat them this season in their opener.

A standout player for Pirates has been Oswin Appolis, who has quickly made his mark with five goal contributions in 12 league appearances. Additionally, he has showcased his talent internationally, scoring twice for Bafana Bafana at the Africa Cup of Nations.

His continued form will be crucial in what is likely to be a fierce contest on Saturday.

With all eyes on the pitch in Polokwane, both teams have plenty at stake as they battle not just for points, but for pride.

As Sekhukhune seeks to arrest their recent slump, the Buccaneers will strive to leverage their superior position and reclaim their status at the top of the Betway Premiership.
