Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Themba Zwane says his side are determined to seize the initiative when they face Sekhukhune United in Sunday’s top-of-the-table Betway Premiership clash at Loftus Versfeld Stadium (3.30 kick-off).

From the outset of the campaign, every match has carried significance for the reigning champions, but as the season edges closer to its conclusion, the stakes have risen even higher.

This weekend’s encounter stands out as one of the most pivotal so far, offering the Brazilians an opportunity to further tighten their grip on the title race in their pursuit of retaining their crown, while simultaneously denting Babina Noko’s championship aspirations.

Six points currently separate the two sides, although Sekhukhune have played a game more. That dynamic adds extra intrigue to the fixture, effectively turning it into a potential six-pointer given what is at stake.

Victory for Sundowns would widen the gap and reinforce their authority in the title race, while a win for the visitors would breathe fresh life into their championship ambitions and strengthen their push for a top-three finish.

The first-round meeting between the teams was a tightly contested affair, with Sundowns eventually emerging 2-0 winners thanks to late goals from Nuno Santos and Brayan Leon. That result relieved mounting pressure on coach Miguel Cardoso and his squad at the time, as scrutiny intensified largely from the supporters.

Zwane expects another stern examination from Eric Tinkler’s men but is confident Sundowns will rise to the challenge if they execute their plans effectively.

“They have been doing well and we are not expecting an easy game,” Zwane said ahead of the clash.

“We know that when we bring our A-game, we win matches. This past week we have been planning how to approach the game. We understand what is required against Sekhukhune — now we just have to execute and get the job done.”

While Sundowns managed to secure all three points in the reverse fixture, Zwane acknowledged that their finishing left room for improvement. He believes greater clinical edge in front of goal will be key to making this encounter more comfortable.

“The last game was very difficult. We created chances and did not take some of them, but we managed to score later on. This time, we need to improve on that and use our opportunities as early as possible to make the game easier for ourselves.”

The pressure in the title race has been amplified this season by the strong form of Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, who have both kept pace near the top of the standings. It is a scenario Sundowns have not often faced during their recent period of dominance, where they have frequently surged clear of their rivals.

Despite the growing external noise, Zwane insists the squad remains focused on its own standards and objectives.

“We are focusing on ourselves. We are taking it one game at a time, and we just want to win all our matches.”

As the Premiership title race intensifies, Sunday’s showdown at Loftus could provide another defining moment in what has already been a compelling and closely contested season.
