In a remarkable milestone for Stellenbosch FC, captain and goalkeeper Sage Stephens has etched his name into the club’s history as the all-time appearance record holder, surpassing former captain Deano van Rooyen.

Stephens recently reached the milestone when he made his 162nd appearance during the CAF Confederation Cup match against Singida Black Stars in Cape Town. The 34-year-old could not contain his emotions during an interview with Stellenbosch FC media, reflecting on a journey that has far exceeded his expectations.

“It’s difficult to describe the feeling because I never thought I’d achieve the record or even come close to it,” he stated.

“When I joined the club, I just wanted to play regularly, so to have achieved what we have since, winning the Carling Knockout and playing in the CAF Confederation Cup, is a testament to a top club and a top team. I couldn’t have scripted it any better myself.”

Stephens’ journey commenced just over five years ago when he made his debut against Maritzburg United. By breaking Van Rooyen’s record, he acknowledged the special significance of his predecessor’s achievements.

“I never thought Deano’s record was attainable because he was so far ahead. His holding of the record as a Stellenbosch local was special,” Stephens remarked. “He had to overcome challenges of his own to get there, so it’s nice to follow on from what he did at the club.”

Now regarded as one of the foremost goalkeepers in South African football, Stephens’ rise has not been without its challenges. He credits his earlier struggles for game time as the crucible that shaped the character and quality needed for success.

“A characteristic that I’ve grown in myself, in both football and in life, is that I always try to prove people wrong,” he explained. “It’s not always the best thing, but in the sports industry, it’s certainly helped me because I’ve used it as a driving force.”

Stephens recalls a pivotal moment from his past that fuelled his determination, stating: “At a previous club, they said I’m the best No 2 in the country, and not the No 1.

"That wasn’t great to hear, but I used it as extra motivation. You can’t listen to one person’s opinion. You have to believe in what you see in the mirror every day; otherwise, you won’t get anywhere.”

His tenacity has paid off at Stellenbosch, where he played an integral role in winning the 2023 Carling Knockout, reaching back-to-back MTN8 finals, and qualifying twice for the CAF Confederation Cup.

Reflecting on the Carling Knockout victory, he said: “Winning the Carling Knockout was the biggest achievement for me.

"I’ve been part of teams where we have won trophies before, but I had never been the starting goalkeeper, so it was an incredible feeling to be there and to lift the trophy.”

Now, as his team prepares for an important Premiership clash against Siwelele FC at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein, Stephens heads into another match ready to build on his already storied legacy.
