Richards Bay FC will look to turn promising performances into points when they host provincial rivals AmaZulu FC in a KwaZulu-Natal derby in the Betway Premiership on Saturday evening (6pm kick-off).
The Natal Rich Boyz come into the clash looking to bounce back after a defeat to Orlando Pirates in Soweto, a result that ended their hopes of taking something from a spirited performance.
Despite the loss, Richards Bay captain Simphiwe Mcineka believes the display against the title contenders showed that his side can compete with the league’s stronger teams.
“From the Pirates game, we knew it wouldn’t be an easy game but we played a good game showed people what we were capable of and not a small team even though we didn’t get the results we wanted,” he said.
The defeat came only a few days after Richards Bay produced one of their standout results of the season, edging Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 in a league encounter that highlighted their ability to frustrate bigger opponents.
However, the KwaZulu-Natal outfit have struggled for consistency in recent weeks, with results fluctuating as they attempt to secure a stable mid-table finish.
For Mcineka, the focus now shifts to ensuring the team converts encouraging performances into points, starting with the derby clash against AmaZulu.
“The good part is now we can draw positives from that performance ahead of the derby against AmaZulu and we don’t expect it to be an easy game as well but I trust our players and our technical, I believe we can make our fans happy this time unlike the last game against Pirates,” he added.
The encounter promises to be a competitive one, with both teams eager to regain momentum.
AmaZulu head into the fixture on the back of mixed form themselves in the league, including a goalless draw against Magesi FC and a narrow defeat to Stellenbosch FC in their recent league outings.
Their last outing saw them embarrassed in the Nedbank Cup, eliminated by Motsepe Foundation Championship side Casric Stars last Saturday.
With both clubs looking to climb the standings, the derby presents an opportunity to secure valuable points while also claiming local bragging rights.
Richards Bay will hope that the confidence gained from their recent performances — particularly against Pirates and Chiefs — can provide the platform for a stronger showing this weekend.
If Mcineka and his teammates can translate that belief into goals and defensive solidity, the Natal Rich Boyz may yet deliver the response their supporters are waiting for.
