Following Mamelodi Sundowns’ unexpected loss to TS Galaxy midweek, the proverbial ball is certainly in the court of Orlando Pirates to decide the Betway Premiership title.
Though Sundowns have won the last eight league titles in a row, it appears their reign could finally come to an end and it’s no longer in their own hands.
The loss to Galaxy was Sundowns’ final game of the season, which left them on 68 points.
Pirates still have two games left, and are just three points behind with 65. In fact, their goal difference is also eight better than Sundowns, so a win and a loss would still be good enough.
Former Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs Reneilwe ‘Yeye’ Letsholonyane conceded that his arch-rival club is destined for league glory.
“With regards to who's going to win it, for the first time in a long time, the league has been close, and it's exciting that teams are improving. Mamelodi Sundowns has been Mamelodi Sundowns, setting the bar very high,” Letsholonyane told SportsBoom.co.za.
Pirates welcome Durban City to Orlando Stadium on Saturday, and a win would unofficially seal them the title.
It would be unofficial because they would need to avoid something like a 9-0 defeat to Orbit College away on May 23.
“With the current state of proceedings in the league, it means the teams that are competing and are improving. And well done to Orlando Pirates, they are very close and are pushing Mamelodi Sundowns to where we are currently. Who's going to win it? The odds are more on Orlando Pirates because they should win their last two games."
“So, the odds are more with Pirates than Mamelodi Sundowns.”
