Johannesburg - Singer Kelly Khumalo has called out the South African Music Awards (Samas) and asked them to respect the hard work she puts into her projects.
The nominees for the 27th edition were announced on Wednesday and Khumalo’s album received a nod for Best Afro Pop Album. She was apparently unhappy with this and in a tweet asked the awards body to remove her work from any category she was nominated for, saying she wants the effort she puts into her work to be respected.
Once the nominees were announced, Limpopo sensation Makhadzi started to trend as she was not nominated in the categories that people were expecting her to be nominated in.
This is not the first time an artist has complained about the nomination process. Cassper Nyovest boycotted the awards in 2018 calling them “trash”.
The 2020 awards also snubbed Master KG’s Jerusalema anthem which went global and went on to receive international awards.
Meanwhile, on the international front, Nasty C who is nominated for Best Hip Hop Album is flying the SA flag high and cementing his name in the US. During his visit in Atlanta the Zulu Man with Some Power worked silently to ensure his album and single Black & White with Ari Lennox continues to climb the charts. The effort paid off. The Steve Biko rapper is now the first South African hip hop artist to break into Urban Radio Top 40 charts in the US. The single has spent the past few weeks in the top 40 and is currently number 39.
