The devastating search for Andile Mngwevu, the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Roads and Transport in Ekurhuleni, has culminated in tragic news, according to the SABC.
The 40-year-old politician’s remains were discovered in Mozambique weeks after he went missing following a catastrophic flooding incident. Mngwevu was one of five occupants in a vehicle that was caught in severe floodwaters in the Chokwé area earlier this month.
The incident occurred amidst a heavy downpour that caused flooding in the region, leading to the vehicle being swept away.
Local authorities and a dedicated South African rescue team initiated extensive search and rescue operations, combing through vast areas affected by the floods. For several weeks, the agonising wait for updates led to an outpouring of support and concern from colleagues, family, and the community at large.
During the search, authorities confirmed that initial contact had been established with one of the vehicle's occupants, heightening hopes for the safe recovery of all five individuals. Unfortunately, despite these efforts, Mngwevu’s whereabouts remained unknown until the recent and heart-wrenching discovery of his remains.
This is a developing story.
