The five men who allegedly robbed Premjis Jewellers have abandoned their bid for bail.

Nkululeko Mbatha, Sfundo Mthethwa, Khetha Ngcobo, Vukani Dlamini, and Anele Radebe, appeared briefly in the Durban Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

They were arrested and charged with business robbery and attempted murder, after they allegedly robbed the store at the Gateway Theatre of Shopping of about R3 million jewellery last Sunday.

They were arrested by members of the Provincial Murder and Robbery Unit while allegedly attempting to find a buyer for the stolen items last Monday.

Lieutenant Colonel Paul Magwaza, a provincial police spokesperson, said while processing the scene at the mall, police received crucial information that the accused were seeking a buyer for the stolen items in Umlazi.

He said the members swiftly acted on the intelligence and proceeded to Umlazi in search of the suspects.

“During the operation, jewellery estimated to be valued at R3 million was recovered as well as clothing, bank cards and mobile routers.”

In addition, it is alleged that while fleeing the accused opened fire with rifles on an armed response officer  who was entering the mall in his vehicle to respond to the incident.

The officer was shot during the exchange of gunfire.

The case was adjourned for further investigation to next month.
