Eskom said it has achieved a significant milestone in its energy generation efforts with the successful return to service of Koeberg Unit 2 on Sunday.
In a statement it said an unexpected steam leak in the reheat system initiated an unplanned outage, and the power utility swiftly implemented its well-established nuclear safety protocols, ensuring that safety standards were maintained throughout the process.
It is said currently, Koeberg Unit 2 has been incrementally ramped up to 646MW output, with plans to increase production to its full capacity of 930MW as operational protocols dictate.
"This restart reinforces Eskom’s commitment to providing reliable baseload power and contributes to stabilising the country’s electricity supply amid ongoing energy challenges."
Bheki Nxumalo, Eskom Group Executive for Generation, underscored the critical role Koeberg plays in enhancing the energy security of South Africa.
“Koeberg is a key contributor as part of Eskom’s energy generation mix, helping to close our national energy supply gap and moving us closer to delivering a cleaner energy portfolio,” he said.
Koeberg Nuclear Power Station, which has been operational for over four decades, has maintained its safety record, adhering to global best practices and stringent regulatory requirements. The recent life extension of Koeberg Unit 1, which has been licensed by the National Nuclear Regulator (NNR) to continue operations until 21 July 2044, further underscores Eskom’s commitment to maximising efficiency and investment in its assets.
Eskom said as Koeberg Unit 1 undergoes essential refuelling and maintenance as part of its life extension process, Koeberg Unit 2 is also on track for an operational lifespan extension, with a request submitted to the NNR to operate for another 20 years beyond its current licence expiry in November 2025.
"Given the recent comprehensive Long-Term Operation (LTO) programme for Unit 2, which included the replacement of three steam generators, inspections, and refuelling, Eskom is poised to demonstrate continued safe and efficient performance.
