Abdeslam Ouaddou has cautioned that Orlando Pirates must brace for a very different challenge when they face Kaizer Chiefs in Sunday’s Soweto Derby (kick-off 3pm).
Pirates come into the clash with recent bragging rights, having dismantled Chiefs 3-0 in the first-round meeting just a month ago. That result underlined their dominance in the fixture, but Ouaddou has been quick to downplay its relevance heading into this encounter.
Instead, the Pirates coach has pointed to Chiefs’ resurgence as a key factor that reshapes the narrative.
“This is another game, we have seen Kaizer Chiefs doing really well for a lot of games and they’re really fit so for us it will be a different game and environment and we have to prepare for that in building an offence so we can keep winning,” said Ouaddou.
Chiefs arrive with renewed momentum, having won five of their last six league matches, a run that has strengthened their grip on a top-three finish while restoring confidence within the squad.
That shift in form presents a far sterner test compared to the side Pirates faced earlier in the season. For Ouaddou, the focus is not on past results but on adapting to the demands of the moment — both tactically and mentally.
Beyond the technical aspects, he also highlighted the magnitude of the occasion, reinforcing the unique pressure that comes with the Soweto Derby.
“The players are not playing an ordinary game, it’s one of the biggest derbies on the continent and even in Europe because I get messages from there as well.”
That global attention only adds to the stakes for both sides, particularly with the Betway Premiership title race still delicately poised.
Pirates remain in contention at the top of the standings, making every fixture — especially one of this magnitude — critical in shaping the outcome of their season.
While recent history may favour Pirates, Ouaddou’s message is clear: this derby will be decided on current form, execution and composure. And with Chiefs rediscovering their rhythm, Sunday’s clash promises to be far more competitive than the last.
