Andre de Jong believes Orlando Pirates are mentally equipped to handle the pressure heading into Sunday’s Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium.
The Buccaneers find themselves at a defining point in their Betway Premiership campaign.
Having dropped points in recent weeks through draws against Siwelele FC and Richards Bay, their title charge has wobbled at a crucial stage.
Yet results elsewhere — most notably Mamelodi Sundowns being held by Stellenbosch — have reopened the door.
Pirates now lead the standings on 58 points, just one ahead of Sundowns, who still hold a game in hand. It leaves the title race delicately poised with five matches remaining, placing even greater significance on Sunday’s derby.
“The game being a derby, it means everyone wants to win it alongside our fans but also the landscape of the league and how it’s looking right, it’s tighter after last night’s result as well,” said De Jong.
For the forward, the pressure surrounding the fixture is not something to fear, but rather something to embrace.
“I think there is added pressure now but in a good way, I think challenging for the league is where Pirates want to be and with five games to go, maximum points at this stage of the season is really important.
“But also Sundowns play after us on Sunday so hopefully we can still be in top spot going into the new week.”
That sense of opportunity has sharpened focus within the Pirates camp, with the squad aware that momentum in the final stretch could define their season.
Alongside De Jong, assistant captain Tapelo Xoki offered insight into the internal dynamics driving the team, particularly the role of senior figures in guiding a group that blends experience with emerging talent.
Despite not featuring on the pitch this season, Xoki has remained an influential presence behind the scenes, helping maintain standards and ensuring the squad stays grounded amid rising expectations.
“We need everyone, not just the best players at the club. We need those who will not play, the people helping prepare the team,” he explained.
His comments reflect the collective approach within the Pirates setup, where contributions extend beyond matchday involvement.
“So for the best players like Rele, it’s always about ensuring that they stay grounded and humble because every week the headlines are about them and to maintain that we need to encourage them and ensure that they respect the processes within the club.”
With talents like Relebohile Mofokeng expected to play a central role, that balance between confidence and discipline could prove decisive.
As the derby looms, Pirates carry both pressure and possibility — but if De Jong’s assessment is anything to go by, it is a challenge they are ready to meet head-on.
