Cape Town - The City has confirmed that the renovation of the Sea Point Fire Station, which is receiving a R10 million investment, is expected to be completed by the end of March.

The building, deemed as a heritage site, is part of a massive refurbishment and reconstruction project in the Sea Point precinct, which also includes the R41 million upgrade of the Sea Point Promenade and Granger Bay parking area.

The building, which is decades old, was given the go-ahead by Heritage Western Cape (HWC) when renovations began last year.

A permit was also granted for the electrical and plumbing works, as well as for the repairs to the damaged ceilings. This week, Jermaine Carelse, spokesperson for the City’s Fire & Rescue Services, confirmed that progress is well underway, with external work such as roof painting set to be completed.

“The building renovations have resumed after the festive season builders’ holiday. The team is on site and progressing well,” he explained.

“They are doing internal work at present and will be tackling the roof next, then the final painting of external walls.

“The completion date for this project is the end of March.”

Ward Councillor, Nicola Jowell said she had liaised with officials last week but was only able to give an update at a later stage before commenting prematurely.

In August 2024, Jowell said via her social media page that the scaffolding had been removed but that the work was not completed as they would be focusing on the internal section of the building including the external such as the gutters.

Previously, Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security JP Smith confirmed that the mechanical and electrical compliance was in progress and that the operations of the fire station were not impacted.

The R10 million budget set for the renovation is under the watchful eye of HWC, Smith had explained.
