Cape Town - The body of a partially naked woman has been discovered at the quarry near Bo-Kaap by a group of boys playing soccer.

According to the Cape Town Central Community Policing Forum (CPF) chairperson, Marc Truss, it appeared as if the woman had been attacked.

She had been found at the old rugby and soccer field along Strand Street towards High Level Road on Monday afternoon.

“They unfortunately found a woman who we initially thought had fallen off the mountain but it appears it was something else.

“We are waiting for the police for further information. We now think that the woman died by probably gender-based violence and probably trauma to the head,” said Truss.

“She is unknown at the moment, we believe it's a black lady, her age between 30 to 35 but not definite.

“Unfortunately she succumbed to her injuries from the abuse.

“That is not acceptable. We have known to see small kids staying in the informal dwellings built around there but she was distant from the informal structures.

“At first it was thought she had a hospital gown on her, they thought she was a mental patient who fell off the mountain, but then later it was found out that it was a dress that was lifted and put over her head.

“This is sad, a life was lost, one life is too many.

“Someone must have seen something happen because this was done during broad daylight.”

The body was found at about 5pm and the police worked until it was dark as they retrieved the remains at the foot of Signal Hill.

The police said they were not investigating murder, as they awaited the autopsy.

Police spokesperson, Wesley Twigg, said: “Cape Town Central police registered an inquest for investigation after the body of an unknown female was found on an open field in Bo-Kaap on Monday, August 19, 2024.

“The body was discovered by one of the youths that were playing on the field. A post-mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death.”
