Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso is not concerned with the over-reliance of in-form striker Iqraam Rayners

His latest victory — a narrow 1-0 win over AmaZulu in the DStv Premiership — has highlighted the remarkable form of striker Rayners, who leads the league's goal-scoring charts with an impressive six goals in just ten matches. Yet, Cardoso remains unperturbed by the prospect of over-reliance on his star striker.

Rayners has been a focal point since Cardoso's arrival, finding the back of the net in each of the coach’s first three games in charge. Despite this, Cardoso expressed confidence that other members of his squad will step up to contribute as the season progresses.

“I’m not really worried because I would worry if we were not creating the chances that we have been in the last games. We have created goal-scoring situations and Iqraam is getting the goals but I believe that we’ll get more coming from different players,” he asserted.

This optimistic outlook is bolstered by Sundowns’ recent defensive solidity. Under Cardoso’s leadership, the team has yet to concede a goal, a testament to the Portuguese coach’s focus on defensive organisation.

Reflecting on his coaching philosophy, Cardoso shared insights into his approach, emphasising the emotional and tactical components of his strategy.

“Most of all, we try to touch their emotions and make everyone understand that in each duel, each ball and each moment, we should give our lives. You should believe that this is the best time to make a difference and don’t let time pass by,” said Cardoso, revealing the motivational tactics he employs to empower his players.

He further elaborated on the importance of teamwork and organisational skills, stating, “After that, we have to create an organisation that we can be comfortable in and have shared values. We also try to increase our capacity to make good defensive transitions.”

This is crucial, especially when facing teams who thrive on quick counter-attacks, such as Stellenbosch FC and AmaZulu.

Looking ahead, Sundowns are set to conclude the year with an away match against Richards Bay this Saturday.

With everything at stake, a result that avoids defeat will ensure Sundowns enters the New Year as leaders of the Betway Premiership, maintaining their lead over second-placed Orlando Pirates. As the season unfolds, all eyes will be on whether Cardoso’s vision will translate into sustained success for the Tshwane giants. | Independent Media Sport
