A Riebeek West cop accused of assaulting his sister will appear in court again next week where he is expected to apply for bail.

Officer Basil Williams, 38, stationed at Riebeek West SAPS, made his first appearance at the Malmesbury Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Williams allegedly assaulted his sister and a minor last week in Deon Adams Avenue in Riebeek West, as the country kicked off Women's Month.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said that the State will oppose bail.

Police spokesperson Novela Potelwa said internal SAPS disciplinary action was under way.

“The management of the SAPS in the Western Cape reiterates its commitment to deal with instances of gender-based violence in all its forms irrespective of who the perpetrator is,” said Potelwa.

Western Cape provincial commissioner Thembisile Patekile said police officials have to lead by example regarding respecting and protecting women and children.

Spokesperson for anti-GBV NGO Ilitha Labantu, Siyabulela Monakali, said it was very important to vet the background of police officers to ensure that they are fit for duty and uphold standards.

“We believe that there must be rigorous accountability and transparent investigations for cases involving police officers, ensuring that officers are held to the highest standards of conduct. This is essential for maintaining public trust,” he added.
