Commonwealth Secretariat applauds Gambia's new digital trade and tourism initiatives

The Republic of The Gambia, in collaboration with the Commonwealth Secretariat, recently launched a series of digital platforms aimed at revolutionising the nation's trade, tourism, and investment sectors.

The event, hosted at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Centre (SDKJICC) in Bijilo, signified a major advancement in Gambia’s digital and economic development.

The event introduced the Gambia E-Market Platform, Gamlumo, along with the Gambia Export Promotion Video and the Tourism Destination Video. These initiatives are key elements of The Gambia’s National Export Strategy (2021-2025), which aims to enhance the country's competitiveness in the global market. The development of these digital tools was supported by the Commonwealth Secretariat’s Trade and Competitiveness Team, showcasing a robust partnership dedicated to boosting The Gambia's economic growth and international presence.

Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland KC, in a recorded message, highlighted the transformative potential of the new digital platforms:

"Today is a landmark moment in The Republic of The Gambia's path towards economic prosperity and global recognition. These initiatives are not merely digital tools; they are gateways to opportunities that transcend physical boundaries, particularly for women-led businesses, which constitute a significant portion of The Gambia's small and medium-sized enterprises."

Secretary-General Scotland reaffirmed the Commonwealth's steadfast support in enhancing The Gambia's digital trade capabilities and brand image, emphasizing the role of e-commerce in fostering economic resilience and empowerment.

Gambia's Minister of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration, and Employment Baboucarr O. Joof, said underscored the significance of the initiative, saying: This platform will enable Gambian businesses to reach global markets more effectively, boosting their competitiveness and driving economic growth.”

He also acknowledged the vital contributions of international partners, including The Commonwealth and the African Development Bank (AfDB), in realising these initiatives and called for ongoing support to develop and maintain these platforms.

The event showcased a live demonstration of the Gambia E-Market Platform, Gamlumo, a digital marketplace empowering Gambian businesses to access global markets. Funded by The Commonwealth, this platform enhances competitiveness and contributes to national economic growth.

With the official launch of these platforms, The Republic of The Gambia is poised to enter a new era of digital transformation, enhancing trade, tourism, and investment opportunities. The Commonwealth Secretariat remains dedicated to supporting The Gambia in its pursuit of shared prosperity and growth.
