Television driving show Opel Speed Star dedicates their second season to the late Gugu Zulu, arguably one of the best race drivers in South Africa.
Marius Roberts - founder of the show - gave a brief description of the show at Zwartkop raceway he elaborated how he misses Zulu. “I have known Zulu for a long time and we’ve once worked together at Ignition. He was such a wonderful person and the rest of the world misses him. We should focus on developing talents such as him, everything we do at the show we always have him in mind,” Roberts said with a smile on Monday August 15.
On season one there were 24 Celebrities with the likes of Boity Thulo, Lalla Hirayama, Melinda Bam, Catherine Constantinides, Darren Simpson, Tumi Morake, Jack Parow, Kurt Darren, Katlego Maboe, Trevor Gumbi, John Smit, Jonathan Kaplan, Jeannie D and others.
However the show wants to do things a bit differently and involve few members of the public to take part of the action. “Season one was a new experience for all of us and we’ve had really amazing guests, “ said Roberts. He added that they decided to have season two open to the public, instead of having 24 celebrities we will be taking 20 this time and will allow four remaining people to the public.
It features Boity as a presenter along with celebrities in the field of sports, music, television and entertainment to take part in the show. They will be given professional driving instruction to compete against each other and the winner will be given money to donate at any charity. In addition to that the winner will also get a watch valued over R30 000 as well as a trip overseas with Michelin to be trained as a raceway driver in case they want to take it up later in life.
Boity shared that when she entered she had not even driven a manual car before but all that has changed and she is now confident about her advanced driving skills.
She added that she is now more cautious when she drives. “I learnt how dangerous it is to text and drive, we think we know how to text and drive but that what causes accidents. I also leant how inability to brake in time can kill,” she said confidently yesterday at Zwartkops raceway.
The show will be broadcasted on Ignition, DSTV channel 189 and will hit the screen in September.
