Durban — A young KwaZulu-Natal body builder says he does not allow his disability to prevent him from pursuing his favourite sport and aiming higher.

Lindelani Mazibuko, 25, from Estcourt, looked forward to competing in the International Fitness and Bodybuilding Federation (IFBB) SA National Championships from August 1-3.

Mazibuko clinched first place in the Wheelchair Bodybuilding and Male Best Poser category of the University Sports South Africa (Ussa) Bodybuilding Competition, held at the North-West University in Potchefstroom earlier this month.

Mazibuko was diagnosed with spina bifida, which hindered his ability to walk, making him reliant on a wheelchair and crutches. But that did not prevent him from living life to the full; instead, he used his disability as an advantage while competing.

Mazibuko said: “Since I use crutches for movement, I saw it as an advantage because they assisted with building my upper body strength since I was young. So, I figured I’d use these muscles.”

Mazibuko’s fitness routine, based on instructions from his coach, Maxwell Nxumalo, includes following a strict diet of starch, vegetables, and plenty of water. He also goes to the gym from 4pm-6pm, daily.

“My passion is driven by the fact that I am a person living with a disability and can lift weights, regardless of how I am built. My wish is to be a professional body builder and the goal is to one day reach the Paralympics and represent my country,” he said.

Mazibuko described himself as a “quiet and shy person” who, when he was not at the gym, spent most of his time focusing on his academics.

He described his childhood as a good one regardless of the challenges.

He matriculated at the Mason Lincoln Special School and is studying towards a National Diploma in Accounting at the Mangosuthu University of Technology in uMlazi, Durban.

He encouraged other people living with a disability to never be discouraged from following their dreams.

“Don’t underestimate yourself. Work hard and chase your dreams.”

Mazibuko’s coach, Maxwell Nxumalo said he was proud of Mazibuko’s achievement and confident that he would perform well in his future endeavours.
