Durban — A farmer, 52, and his employee were attacked by a swarm of bees after hearing shots fired from a high-calibre rifle upon inspection on his small holding in Canelands, north of Durban, on Thursday morning.
Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) spokesperson Prem Balram said that their officers were dispatched to the small holding at 9.27am after reports of an active shooting.
Balram said that while en route, the reaction officers received an update that the farmer and his employees were being attacked by a swarm of bees.
Balram said that when officers arrived, they met the farm owner who stated that he was on foot patrol with an employee when he heard two shots being fired from a high-calibre rifle. He drew his personal firearm and proceeded in the direction where the shots were fired from.
“As he approached a bee box, he and his employee were attacked by the swarm. He added that he heard a motorcycle speeding off from the vicinity while he and his employee swatted off the bees. The man sustained multiple stings and received medical attention on the scene,” Balram said.
He said that the Rusa R44 helicopter took off from the helipad and conducted an extensive search of the surrounding sugar cane field for the shooters.
“No arrests were made,” Balram added.
