Durban — The KwaZulu-Natal department of sport, arts and culture, in partnership with the KwaZulu-Natal Sports Confederation, has encouraged the public to vote in their numbers for their favourite in the Sports Personality of the Year category for the 2022 KZN Sport Awards.

The annual awards are aimed at celebrating, recognising and rewarding excellence among the province’s best sports personnel who have shown resilience in the sporting sector, notwithstanding the challenges the industry faced in the recent past.

The Sports Personality of the Year, a category that is voted for by the public, will be one of 19 categories at the glittering function scheduled to take place at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli ICC in Durban on October 8.

The other 18 categories were shortlisted by an independent adjudication panel. The adjudication process is audited by independent auditors.

The public are urged to choose and vote for their favourite Sports Personality of the Year from the five finalists which were selected by a panel of media personalities who undertook a rigorous process of assessing the best performers.

The finalists are:

1. Alani Ferreira

2. Lukhanyo Am

3. Mhlengi Gwala

4. Phiwokuhle Mnguni

5. Shabnim Ismail.

KZN sport, arts and culture MEC Amanda Bani-Mapena encouraged sports enthusiasts to vote, saying that this was an opportunity for the public to ensure that their favourite sports personality wins.

Bani-Mapena said through the awards, the department was recognising sports people for their dedication and excellence on and off the field of play.

“The Sports Personality of the Year category offers members of the public an opportunity to cast their votes from the list of sports stars who have been shortlisted by a knowledgeable panel. We encourage everyone to vote in numbers before the closing date,” she said.

Members of the public can cast their votes and stand a chance to win great prizes by SMSing KZN Awards and the number of their favourite finalist to 33258. SMS voting is limited to 10 votes per user.

The closing date for voting is October 7 at 11.59pm.
