DURBAN - South African Weather Service (Saws) forecaster Wisani Maluleke said for the rest of the week, they were expecting more rainy days with thunderstorms and temperatures remaining relatively cool.
“We’re expecting temperatures to be cooler but not cold like in winter. It won’t be hot in most of the province,” Maluleke said.
“On Sunday and Monday, we expect a bit of warmth, but from today (Tuesday), temperatures will be cooler.”
Maluleke said not a lot of rain fell in the province. The highest recorded was 26mm.
When they look out for thunderstorm activity, they also look out for strong winds and severe lightning.
Maluleke said, these days, Saws looked at the impact of weather events.
Maluleke said Saws had an alert for severe thunderstorms and had been looking out for thunderstorm activity but had not received any reports of damages caused by the severe thunderstorms that were expected from Monday afternoon into the evening.
The alert Saws had issued warnings for severe thunderstorms that were expected to result in localised damage to settlements and infrastructure over open areas due to strong winds. Severe lightning may result in localised fires, injuries to humans and livestock, and localised damage to vehicles due to hail. Heavy downpours may lead to localised flooding.
The thunderstorms were expected on Monday afternoon, persisting into the evening.
The storms were expected to be accompanied by strong winds, hail, excessive lightning and a possibility of downpours in some places.
Saws said thunderstorms were expected with scattered showers and thundershowers for most of the province, and the alert for severe thunderstorms is for the western and southern parts of the province.
Affected areas included Newcastle, Ladysmith, Mooi River, Estcourt, Underberg, Ixopo, Pietermaritzburg, Harding, Margate, Port Shepstone, Scottburgh and up to eThekwini.
