Durban — A 43-year-old woman alleged to have killed her 14-year-old daughter is expected to apply for bail on Friday in the Ntuzuma Magistrate’s Court.

KwaMashu mom Ncamisile Evarista Hlophe was arrested on July 25 and charged with the murder of Luvuyo Tafadzwe Bera.

According to police, Hlophe appeared in the Ntuzuma Magistrate’s Court on Monday, July 29, following her arrest and she was remanded in custody until Friday, August 2, for bail application.

“Reports indicate that on Monday, 22 July 2024, the suspect informed the police that her daughter had taken some medication for a headache and she fell down from her bed. The victim had an open wound at the back of her head and was declared dead on the scene. An inquest docket was opened at KwaMashu police station for investigation. Post-mortem results revealed that the death was not of natural causes and the wound was inflicted with an unknown instrument. The mother was then arrested and charged with murder,” said spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda.

It is also alleged the post-mortem revealed strangulation marks.

Meanwhile, the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court recently refused bail for a 30-year-old man charged with the murder of his 8-year-old son.

Siyabonga Innocent Shezi is alleged to have beaten and then strangled Sfundo Sibisi in the Shongweni area in January 2023, three months before his ninth birthday and a few days away from beginning Grade 3 at Umthala Primary School in KwaNdengezi.

Shezi was arrested on the day of the alleged murder. At the time, he tendered a confession and did a pointing out of the scene to police following his court appearance. Shezi chose to abandon his bail application.

However, after his matter had been transferred from the district to the regional court, which is the trial court, and after a pretrial conference was held, Shezi in an about-turn indicated that he wanted to exercise his right to apply for bail.
