Selena Gomez has been slammed after she filmed herself breaking down in tears while speaking about President Trump's policy regarding the deportation of Mexican people.
The actress, 32, uploaded an emotional video on her Instagram Story on Monday morning in which she sobbed over President Donald Trump deporting undocumented immigrants hours after he issued a daily quota of arrests for border officials.
The singer, whose father is of Mexican descent, captioned her Instagram post with an apology, "I'm sorry” with a Mexican flag emoji.
In her recording, which has since been deleted, Selena admitted she felt powerless over the situation, telling her 422 million followers:
"All my people are getting attacked. The children. I don't understand. I'm so sorry, I wish I could do something, but I can't. I don't know what to do. I'll try everything,” Gomez said before she removed the video from her social media.
The video did not sit well with social media users though, who were quick to slam her for not using her reported net worth of $1.3 billion (R24 billion) to take action herself.
Broadcaster Piers Morgan commented; “Posting yourself weeping over illegal immigrant criminals being deported is a new level of absurd celebrity narcissism.”
Another posted: “What a moron. What purposes does this serve? Is this a PR stunt???? Who cares what Selena Gomez thinks. Keep it to yourself. Disgraceful.”
Others commented on how she could support those affected by using her own funds.
“When I felt powerless, I cried a lot in frustration, but behind closed doors... Not for the world to see. Celebs with their wealth and influence, have the power to fix things, yet they choose to put on a show instead of taking real action. It's just shallow,” commented another follower.
“Girl, you have the resources to do a lot. You could fund legal services, translation services, permanently fund mutual aid programs, direct action that disrupts raids, immigration assistance programs that facilitate these folks on their way in etc.”
