The award-winning poet and celebrated praise singer, Jessica Mbangeni, has died.

Mbangeni’s family announced the activist poets death on Saturday. The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mbangeni was a celebrated activist who would perform her praise poetry at funerals and presidential inaugurations.

Mbangeni was born in Nqamakwe, Eastern Cape, in 2002 she joined the Soweto Gospel Choir and toured the world. She later pursued her career as a poet.

“Dr. Bishop Jessica was a beacon of light, a voice of wisdom, and a source of inspiration to many. Her contributions to our community and the world as a praise poet, spiritual leader, and cultural ambassador were immeasurable, and her legacy will live on in the hearts of those she touched,” said her family in a short statement.

She wore many hats as she was also a singer, and in 2014, she released her live album, iGoli.

In 2015, her studio album, Busisiwe Tribute was released. The late praise poet was also featured on Afropop star, Vusi Nova’s ‘’As’phelelanga’’

Through her poetry, Mbangeni inspired many, contributing to the community as a cultural ambassador and spiritual leader.

In 2017, she won the Best Traditional Album award for her iGoli live album at the South African Music Awards. She was also recently nominated under the Traditional Artist of the year category at the Basadi in Music Awards.

Mbangeni also delved into acting, pursuing her acting career in 2013 making her on screen debut in Zabalaza and a guest appearance on Skeem Saam.

Tributes have begun to pour in on social media, celebrating Mbangeni’s efforts and remarkable life. The family has announced that more details will be shared for her memorial service and funeral arrangements.
