Memorial and funeral service details for legendary Kwaito star Mapaputsi announced

The memorial and funeral services for legendary kwaito star Sandile "Mapaputsi" Ngwenya have been announced.

Mapaputsi passed away on September 5 after battling an illness, his family confirmed in a statement. His death was announced the following day.

Hailing from Zola, Mapaputsi went from being a back-up vocalist for music greats such as Sis Rebecca Malope and Vuyo Mokoena to becoming one of SA’s greatest Kwaito Superstar.

Friends and family will gather at his memorial service at Eyethu Shopping Centre in Machaba Drive in Mofolo, Soweto on September 12 from 2pm to 6pm.

His funeral service will be held on September 14 at Dlamini Multi-purpose Centre Hall in Koma Street in Dlamini from 8am to 11am and will be laid to rest at West Park Cemetery's Heroes Acre.

In their statement, the family expressed their appreciation for the outpouring support and also requested privacy as they dealt with his passing.

“Whilst the family appreciate the immense outpouring of support, love and condolences, the family would like to request for some space and privacy in processing the news and making plans for his burial.”

Mapaputsi is well known for his iconic hit “Izinja”, and his 2001 album “Izinja” achieved huge success including two Metro FM Awards in 2002 for Best Kwaito Artist and Best Kwaito Song.
