Fans of the "Star Wars" universe can finally mark their calendars, as Disney+ has released the trailer for the highly anticipated second season of the Emmy-nominated thriller, "Andor".

Set to return with its final season on April 22, the new season promises to elevate the stakes as the horizon of conflict looms ever closer.

As viewers dive into the gripping narrative, they will witness the evolution of familiar characters and their intricate relationships against the backdrop of the rebellion’s struggles.

According to the streaming giant, the series is a prequel to "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story", detailing the events leading up to one of the most heroic acts in the franchise, the daring heist of the "Death Star" plans.

The series will transport viewers back five years before the chaos of “Rogue One”, showcasing the transformation of Cassian Andor from a disenchanted, cynical outsider to a pivotal rebel hero destined for greatness.

The series will reveal how he emerges as a crucial figure within the Rebel Alliance.

In this season, no character is safe from the inevitable tensions, betrayals and sacrifices, as their conflicting agendas set the stage for profound encounters that will leave audiences breathless.

Tony Gilroy, creator and executive producer said: "One of the great thrills of making ‘Andor’ is the scale of the story and the number of characters we’re able to meet. Ordinary people, Imperial overlords, passionate revolutionaries.

"They are real people making epic decisions, all of them staring down questions with terrifying consequences.

"Cassian’s journey is the soul and spine of our story, but it’s the choir that makes the show. I’m so excited for audiences to see where we go in season 2."

'Andor' will be streaming on Disney+ from April 22.

Returning to the screen is Diego Luna as Cassian Andor, alongside a stellar cast including Stellan Skarsgård, Genevieve O’Reilly, Denise Gough, Kyle Soller, Adria Arjona, Faye Marsay, Varada Sethu and Elizabeth Dulau.

The final season will unfold over 12 episodes broken down into four chapters of three episodes each.

  • The first chapter will premiere on April 22 on Disney+, with new episodes rolling out weekly thereafter.
