Mzansi Magic telenovela “Champions” has not been green lit for a second season, the channel has confirmed.

“Champions” made its screen debut in February, featuring an all-star cast featuring Sello Maake ka-Ncube, Thembinkosi Mthembu, Kgomotso Christopher, Tumisho Masha, Jo-anne Reyneke and Kwenzo Ngcobo.

Since its debut “Champions” has not made the Broadcast Research Council of South Africa’s list for the top 30 primetime viewing audience numbers.

Director of Local Entertainment Channels Shirley Adonisi thanked Tshedza Pictures - who also produced the award winning ‘The River’

“Mzansi Magic plays a pivotal role in entertaining viewers during prime-time, and we continue to keep up with the latest television trends.

“We are currently in the development of several new show concepts not limited to telenovelas and fine-tuning our key returning shows to ensure that Mzansi Magic’s prime-time 2025 slots are well received,” she said.

Fans are divided over Mzansi Magic’s decision with some having faith in the storyline and hoping that it could grip more viewers.

“Champions” will stop airing in January 2025 and for the next six months viewers can expect cameo appearances and a continuation of jaw dropping and surprising storylines.

News of the telenovela not being given a green light for a second season comes at a time where linear broadcasters are losing viewer numbers to streaming platforms.

SABC 2 soapie “Muvhango” had to resort to dramatic PR stunts and cast makeovers to secure another season after negotiations deadlocked between Word of Mouth and the public broadcaster.
