“Expressed”
A haunting musical that sheds light on gender-based violence and the survival of women will take place at Seabrooke’s Theatre.
Written and directed Mthokozisi Zulu, “Expressed” will confront the harsh truths faced by women in a society where the safety of their existence hangs by a thread.
Set against the backdrop of systemic oppression and cycles of violence, the narrative unveils the dire need for empowerment and self-defence among women, embodied in the character of the character of Safia, portrayed by Ayanda Nzimande.
As the story unfolds, Safia’s husband, Leo, keenly aware of the dangers that threaten their lives, takes it upon himself to train his wife to navigate a hostile world.
Minenhle Sikhosana is set to deliver a poignant portrayal of Mama, a matriarch and witness to the the relentless march of violence against women.
Her character reflects the collective turmoil faced by so many women who are trapped in cycles of abuse and despair.
As a nurturing force within the narrative, Mama's experiences provide a grave insight into the reality of daily intimidation, compelling audiences to confront these often-unspoken horrors.
The musical also features a powerful special appearance by Mbalenhle Mavimbela, whose role promises to add further complexity and depth to the narrative.
Through her performance, audiences are invited to explore a different side of the harsh war women face.
With an age restriction of 16 (language and violence), “Expressed” is not just intended to entertain but to provoke thought and inspire action regarding the alarming rates of gender-based violence.

“The Tales of Hoffmann”
Prepare for an extraordinary cinematic experience as The Royal Opera's new production, “The Tales of Hoffmann” comes to the Rhumbelow Theatre, Umbilo.
The production, which recently debuted at the Royal Opera House, features a stellar cast led by the illustrious tenor Juan Diego Flórez as the titular character, poet E.T.A. Hoffmann.
Flórez will be joined by the mesmerizing voices of Ermonela Jaho (Antonia), Olga Pudova (Olympia) and Marina Costa-Jackson (Giulietta).
The production invites viewers to embark on a journey through time, exploring Hoffmann's experiences and disillusionments encapsulated through the stories of his three loves, portrayed by the talented lead singers.
Director Damiano Michieletto, known for his innovative interpretations and collaborations with prestigious opera houses, elaborated on his vision for this new production: “I imagined Les Contes d’Hoffmann as a journey through time, a look into the different ages of the protagonist, all represented by the female protagonists.
Stella will end the story by destroying Hoffmann's illusions, leaving him alone with all the symbols of his fantasy past world, echoing his poetic universe.”
