Durban - Tomorrow, Durbanites will hear that Christmas can sound both familiar and fresh – and there’s a bonus: they’ll have the privilege of singing along to some carols, accompanied by a full symphony orchestra.
“That’s no ordinary Christmas treat,” says Ros Conrad, director of the Durban Symphonic Choir.
“Some of the music is by one of the most successful of all living composers, who takes the traditions of Christmas, then gives it a twist.”
Tomorrow’s concert features a number of original carols by Britain’s John Rutter as well as arrangements of Yuletide songs from the 15th, 18th and 19th centuries.
Naum Rousine is conducting this Christmas bonanza to produce full-sized sound from the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Symphonic choir for a strident song like The Holy City and for Jingle Bell Rock.
The venue is Red Point Church at 80A Caversham Road, Pinetown and starts at 3pm. Tickets for adults cost R130; R50 for children under 12 and are available online or at the door.

Two days later, there’s a another stellar line-up at KZN Rising Stars concert night in which seven outstanding young performers from around the province will shine bright.
The school pupils will perform at the Durban Jewish Club.
