Durban - Flamenco and the music of Spain will be the theme of the Baroque 2000 concert at Durban’s Mariannhill Monastery this weekend.

Acclaimed Spanish dancer Linda Vargas is the guest artist and will perform some virtuoso castanet sounds over Luigi Boccherini’s Fandango from his Guitar Quintet, as well as through Antonio Vivaldi’s La Follia or Spanish Follies.

Demi Fernandes will be the guitarist. The ensemble will also perform Athanasius Kircher’s Modo Hypodorico, a collection of beautiful airs, seldom presented in concert, as well as a Concerto Grosso, by the famous Archangelo Corelli.

This is No. 1 of a suite of 12 concerti Corelli published in 1714, containing some of the finest examples of Baroque music. They were the model for the publication in London, in 1739, of Handel’s own collection of 12.

The concert takes place tomorrow at 11.30am at the Church of the Mariannhill Monastery.

Tickets are R150 at the door.

The Monastery tea garden is open for coffee/tea and light lunches.

The show will be repeated on October 5 at 9pm at The Chairman, 146 Mahatma Gandhi (Point) Road. Tickets are R150 at the door, including a welcome drink. A cash bar and the restaurant will be open before the show and late into the night. Contact: Michel 0823035241.
