Getting the weekend off to a great start is Craft Fest, brought to you by The Independent on Saturday and Shongweni Farmer’s and Craft Market at the market grounds in Shongweni.

From chicken to burgers to vegan bites, beers to granadilla ciders, and designer gins to gourmet slush puppies, the Craft Fest will offer a feast to satisfy your taste buds in a fun-filled family environment.

Some of the brewers to look out for include The Free State’s Clarens Brewery, the Standeaven Brewery, the 1000 Hills Brewing Company, Basset Breweries, Scavengers Brewery, Drayman’s Brewery and The Toti Brewing Company.

“It’s an opportunity for the whole family to spend a day where they can taste a variety of food and drink, get busy creating craft items and just relax while listening to great music,” said market owner Christine Standeaven.

Plus there’s an opportunity to buy dad a real crafty Father’s Day gift.

Craft Fest is on Friday from 10am to 4.30pm. Tickets are R100 for adults and R50 for children, from Quicket.

For the rugby-loving family, there are two major international matches in Durban. First up is the inaugural rugby match at Moses Mabhida where South Africa A take on the French Barbarians. Tickets are R90. Kick-off is at 4.45pm.

The highlight of Durban’s rugby season is the Test when the Boks take on the might of France at Kings Park next Saturday. The Test starts at 5pm and tickets cost from R250 to R500 through Computicket.

SPECTATOR: There are two big international rugby matches in Durban, so pack your coolers and head for the stadium. Or treat that special man in your life to watching the rugby at The Locker Room Sports Bar, a 300-seater suite inside Kings Park. It boasts state-of-the-art sound and lighting and eight flat screen TVs. Tickets cost R1500.

Or join the fans at Bok Town at SunCoast and watch the action on the big screen. Tickets are R40 and doors open at 3pm.

Is dad a keen fisherman? While the tuna are running and game fish are out to play, what better way to spend time with dad than out at sea?

The Durban Fishing Charters website offers 17 different charter companies and any variety of fishing trips from a two-hour jaunt around the bay at R150 a person to an full-day deep-sea trawl of the KZN coastline for 10 at R7500. The Ntenga Foundation holds it annual 5km or 10km charity fun run starting at Moses Mabhida Stadium at 7am and ending at uShaka Marine World’s Wet ’* Wild on Friday.

The foundation raises funds to buy shoes for pupils in rural areas, where many go to school barefoot. This year’s race aims to attract 6000 runners.

HIT THE ROAD: The Ntenga Foundation holds it annual 5km or 10km charity fun run.

After the run there is a mass aerobics display plus prize-giving and post-race entertainment.

Treat dad to a picnic dinner and a show with the Rhumbelow Theatre’s A Tribute to Ella Fitzgerald and Erroll Garner. In this fun-filled performance, singer Kerry Cherry takes us on a journey that relives the first lady of song. She is accompanied by David Langley (piano), Mark Momple (bass) and Riley Giandhari (drums) as they belt out tunes of the great Garner from A Tisket, A Tasket to play Misty for Me.

JAZZY: Kerry Cherry sings Ella Fitzgerald's songs at a tribute show at the Rhumbelow Theatre.The venue opens 90 minutes before showtime, so bring a picnic basket and enjoy some quality family time.
