The Palki Restaurant promised many options for vegetarians. The list was long so we spent some time reading it.

Each dish appeared by name only, with few hints as to what they were. Some had a brief description but none on the vegetarian choices.

But we knew we were safe because they were listed under the vegetarian section.

We had to go in search of someone to get us drinks (rock shandies, R25) and placed our starter orders. These were pretty obvious: veg samoosa (four pieces with a dip, R29) and brinjal pakoda (R48).

The samoosas were good, and the dip had just enough bite. The brinjals – thin slices of brinjal in a batter – earned J’s admiration, but I thought they needed a bit of salt.

We had a bit more direction for our mains, with a clearly busy waiter zipping through a quick description. We decided on aloo palais (potato and spinach “balls” with a spinach sauce, R65) and malai kofta (potato “balls” and a creamy paneer/tomato gravy, R64), with a garlic naan (R20) and butter naan (R18).

The malai kofta was delicious and we quicky cleaned the bowl with a plain naan as an accompaniment. The aloo palais lacked a little something to zing it up.

For desserts we had a kulfi ice cream (R35) and a bunny hug (R36). The kulfi was tasty and perfect for a hot day. The bunny hug? It was a simple ice cream with chocolate sauce.

They were busy so perhaps the staff were distracted, but we were made to feel like a burden with our questions.
