DURBAN - WITH the fashion stakes setting the bar high at this year’s Vodacom Durban July, The Independent on Saturday caught up with designer David Tlale at Summerveld Training Centre to find out more about his Red collection being launched at Greyville on Saturday.
“The colour stands for boldness, daring and passion and it has been a fantastic journey for us,” says the man who aims to be a “game changer” in the industry.
“It will speak volume to the crowds. It brings back the sexy, brings back the glamour. We went for pure sophistication when it comes to silhouettes, the volume of the dresses and also the texture of the fabrics – we played around.
“We developed our own print so you won’t find this anywhere else in the world and when you look at the print, it’s got veins of the heart and twigs which represent life – and people dancing – it’s very passionate when all the elements came together. The print leads the design.
“We worked with the flowy fabrics. We worked with silk, chiffon, organza, lace, tulle satin and a bit of leather – it’s a trademark for me.” Tlale said.

The collection takes in 10 looks – six female, four men.
“It starts from on the edge of ready-to-wear to avant garde – and will add a bit of drama for the July audience.”
So what is he hoping to see at the July?
“I’m hoping people start dressing up. I’m hoping to see fashionistas, wannabes, designers. Sixteen years later I’m still growing. Do I still love it? Yes. Would I do anything else in the world? Absolutely not.”
