Sushi is more than just food, it’s an art form, a cultural experience, and a feast for your taste buds. 

But let’s be real. If you’re new to sushi or even if you’ve had it a hundred times, you might still be wondering, “Am I eating this right?” 

Here’s your guide to learning all there is to know about how to enjoy sushi

Step 1: Know your sushi

First off, let’s clear something up: sushi doesn’t just mean raw fish. 

Sushi refers to the vinegared rice that serves as the base. 

You’ve got a variety of options like nigiri (fish on rice), maki (rolls), sashimi (just fish, no rice), and more. 

Each type offers a slightly different way to enjoy sushi.

Step 2: Chopsticks or hands?

It’s absolutely fine to use your hands to eat sushi, especially nigiri. 

In fact, in Japan, using your hands is considered perfectly acceptable and even traditional. 

But if you’re more comfortable with chopsticks, then go for it. 

Just make sure you handle them gracefully. Please don’t go and stab the sushi!

Step 3: Soy sauce rules

Soy sauce is there to enhance the flavour, not drown it. 

When eating nigiri, dip the fish side, not the rice, into the soy sauce. 

This keeps the rice from falling apart and prevents it from soaking up too much soy. 

For rolls, you can lightly dip one end if needed.

Step 4: Wasabi and ginger

Wasabi is meant to add a subtle kick, not set your mouth on fire.

Most sushi already comes with a bit of wasabi, but if you want more, add it sparingly to your fish or mix a small amount into your soy sauce. 

As for the pickled ginger, it’s not a topping, it’s a palate cleanser. 

Eat a slice between different types of sushi to reset your taste buds.

Step 5: One bite, one piece

Sushi is designed to be eaten in one bite. 

That’s why it’s made in small, bite-sized portions. 

Cutting it or taking multiple bites can change the texture and balance of flavours.
