More than 120 children will participate in this year's Phuza Water KZN Junior Golf Masters Tournament, to be played at the prestigious Umhlali Country Club, just north of Durban, next month.

Central Durban Golf Club, who hosts the tournament, secured a sponsorship from Phuza Water to see children excel in the game of golf.

Kwazulu-Natal businessman Gustav Fortman said that he was so excited at the success of the previous tournaments that his company volunteered to sponsor for the next two years.

Tournament director Juggie Pillay said he too was overwhelmed that CDGC was recognised for the sterling efforts being made to promote the game of golf among children.

“It heartens us to see that people out there recognise the work we put in to see a new Papwa Sewgolum, a Vincent Tshabalala, a Tiger Woods or a Ernie Els emerge from our community.”

“Some of our children that played in our tournaments have already represented South Africa in games overseas.”

Pillay added that it is a feather in Central Durban Golf Club’s cap.

“I urge businesses to step forward in an effort to help children grow in the game of golf. It’s the fastest-growing sport in the world, and the enthusiasm shown by children must be nourished so that we can help them gain confidence to make a name for themselves and bring honour to all of us.”

Pillay said that the tournament on Sunday, September 1, will be contested over 18 holes for juniors with official handicaps in three divisions.

“Experienced children without official handicaps will also be allowed to participate. Girls and their male counterparts play in the same division, giving them the excitement to show their skills against each other.”
