Msunduzi Municipality is clamping down on illegal activities within its area such as operating illegal butcheries, and building code violations.

A few days ago the City shut down part of Pietermaritz Street where it identified numerous buildings and health code violations.

The municipality said in a statement that law enforcement officials are actively working to enforce regulations and maintain safety standards in the city.

“Officials from environmental health and business licensing led the blitz operation on West Street, targeting stores selling unprocessed meat in violation of the Meat Safety Act. The meat was confiscated and the owners charged for this action.

“The confiscated meat indicates a serious breach of public health regulations, and the ongoing blitz operations are aimed at ensuring compliance and restoring law and order in the city,” it said.

Deputy Mayor Mxolisi Mkhize said they want to return the streets of the city to their former glory.

“We have an operation to restore this area. We found that there are people keeping meat in the fridges in areas that are unlicensed for this purpose, and that meat is sold to people… We have confiscated the meat and it will be given to the lions at the Lion Park, the deputy mayor said.

“We have also demolished illegal structures, some people had added extensions to their homes and even built verandas illegally, while others have even built on pavements. We have demolished those structures and we will continue to do so as we work to restore the area to its former glory,” said Mkhize.
