The community of Ntuzuma north of Durban is in shock after the gruesome murder of a female teacher Dudu Khumalo (46) on Monday morning.

Khumalo was shot and killed inside the Phikwayo Primary school premises.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed that police in Ntuzuma are investigating a case of murder.

"This follows an incident in which a 46-year-old woman was allegedly shot and killed inside school premises at Richmond Farm in Ntuzuma on Monday morning.

"Information at the police’s disposal at this stage indicates that two unknown suspects fired several shots at the victim before fleeing the scene. The woman was declared dead at the scene."

The school’s governing body (SGB) chairperson Trevor Mbazo said they are devastated. Mbazo said as parents they are still coming to terms with the death of Khumalo.

“This is really sad because we do not understand who would want to hurt Khumalo. Everyone is sad and devastated by this from pupils to teachers and the whole community.

“We decided that the learners should be dismissed because of the trauma they went through today,” said Mbazo.

The school’s principal Mthokozisi Mchunu described Khumalo as someone who was always happy and did not have any enemies.

“Khumalo was very dedicated and loved her job, we still do not understand who would want to kill such a kind soul. We put all our trust in the police now, because we want justice for what happened,” he said.

The EFF in KZN condemned the killing and called for stronger measures to protect pupils and teachers in schools.
