Durban - Residents have decried the drawn out construction work taking place as part of the GO!Durban project.

Residents were commenting on an alert by the eThekwini Municipality regarding construction work on the GO!Durban C9 route in Phoenix.

The municipality posted on its Facebook page about the work that is under way.

“Due to the construction work taking place at the Phoenix Highway and Lenham/Longbury Drive intersection, the public is requested to exercise caution. A significant deviation of road lanes will be experienced on the south- and north-bound lanes,” the municipality said in the post.

In response to the post, residents said the work was taking too long and the project had yet to get off the ground.

The project has been stalled for several years as the city has been engaged in protracted and lengthy negotiations with taxi operators whose livelihoods would be affected by it.

One resident commented that the construction work was taking years.

“It's taking three years to complete this section of the road of just 1km. The construction company is raking in millions of rand for this contract. This is causing major traffic havoc especially during peak hours.”

Another commented that there was no movement on the project.

“Check out Pinetown, all they do is guard and clean the stations that is not in use. It's a beautiful monument.”

A third said: “Sadly the GO!Durban initiative in Pinetown is a ‘No Go’ despite all the infrastructure put in place.”

Deputy mayor Philani Mavundla told The Mercury last month that the city was on the verge of striking a deal with the taxi operators that would allow the project to take off.
