Durban - Thompsons Bay Beach in Ballito north of Durban in KwaZulu-Natal has been reopened to the public after it was closed last week after a sewer main of Siza Water’s Simbithi Pump Station ruptured, causing an overflow of sewage into the beach.

The Mercury reported last week that KwaDukuza Local Municipality was conducting water quality testing following a sewage spill to ensure that all health and safety aspects are adhered to.

In a statement on Tuesday the municipality said it had received positive laboratory results regarding the water quality at this beach.

“The KwaDukuza Municipality wishes to inform its residents, businesses, and tourists that Thompsons Bay Beach is officially opened for public use,” said the statement.

The municipality appealed to tourists to continue supporting the area.

“Once more, the KwaDukuza Municipality apologises profusely to all persons whose plans were inconvenienced because of the emergency beach closure, the decision had to be taken to protect beachgoers,” said the municipality.

Willard Beach was also closed last week.

Siza Water said as a result of a generator fault at Siza Water’s Sewer Pump station 10 during on-day load shedding, sewage overflowed on to Willard Beach.
