Two years ago, 12-year-old Kathryn DiMaria of Dearborn, Michigan persuaded her parents to let her buy a very tired 1986 Pontiac Fiero 2.8 SE coupé (she liked its compact shape and smooth styling) as a project, with the aim of completely rebuilding it by the time she's old enough to drive it!
It's a family project; her father Jerry provides technical advice (he keeps reminding her to wear goggles when she's using a grinder!) and younger sister Jessica takes the photos, but the funding has all come from her own pocket - and there’s a lesson in that for all of us .
Two years later, the interior and most of the body work is done (Kathryn's mother taught her to work a sewing machine so she could do the black and yellow interior trim herself) and Kathryn has ditched the original engine in favour of a 3.4-litre V6 engine from a Chev Camaro, which she is now busy rebuilding.
